I just read an interview with Tork, saying HE did the bass...Whoever did it, it's a great line...

Seriously, Micky Dolenz has one of the most underrated voices in music history.

The Beatles NEVER got this funky... This is one area, along with Country/Rock, where the Beatles had no advantage.

There are 2 recorded versions of this song. One has Tork playing bass and the other has Chip Douglas. They don't sound that much different because Tork was more of an accomplished musician than most gave him credit for. If you listen to the 2 recorded versions one after the other carefully, you will notice a few minor differences.

Chip Douglas is said to have done the bass on this actually. He was also the producer.

You could be right. In the Andrew Sandoval book (The Monkees: The Day-By-Day) it does say Chip is playing bass on the recorded version, but in the CD booklet it says Tork. Funny thing is that Sandoval also did the notes for the CD Booklet...

I think they should have hired Douglas as "The Bass Player", move Peter to Lead guitar, Mike to Rhythm...They would have been happier all around and a more solid road band...Chip was a KILLER sonwriter. Nesmith and Douglas would have been a great team.
